It is not worth skimping on employee safety – why are PPE inspections so important?
In an industry where people work a dozen or so, and sometimes several dozen metres above the ground, there is no room for compromise. Every day, employees of companies dealing with industrial rope access are at serious risk. Under such conditions Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) they are not an accessory – they are an essential working tool and the foundation of safety.
And yet it still happens that regular LOTO inspections are played down or put off. In this article we explain why this is not only a mistake, but a real hazard.
What are SOIs and why are they so important?
Personal Protective Equipment this is a complete set of equipment that protects the worker against falls from a height and other hazards. In the context industrial rope access, we are talking about very specific equipment, such as:
- safety harnesses – body-hugging, ensuring comfort and safety during work,
- lanyards and safety lines – used for connecting the worker to an anchorage point,
- self-retracting lifelines – arrest a fall and minimise the consequences of a fall,
- safety helmets – protecting the head against impact or falling objects,
- karabiners and pulleys – rope connection and guiding elements,
- work and safety ropes – basic access and fall protection equipment.
Each of these components operates under heavy load, in demanding conditions – often exposed to moisture, UV radiation, dust, sharp edges or temperature changes. Even the best equipment suffers from wear and tear over time. And that is precisely why regular technical inspection is absolutely essential.

SOI inspections – a legal obligation or a necessity?
According to By the regulation of the Minister of Economy dated 30 October 2002, personal protective equipment must be regularly inspected and subjected to technical reviews at least once a year, and also always after the occurrence of situations that could have affected their condition (e.g., a fall, overload, contact with chemical substances).
But it's not just a matter of regulations – it's a matter common sense and responsibility.
What are the benefits of regular SOI servicing?
🛠️ Early damage detection
During a professional inspection, micro-damage, chafing, mechanical wear or material changes can be detected that may look unassuming from the outside - but under working conditions can lead to a tragedy.
✅ Compliance with standards and law on your website
PPE inspections are not only about safety, but also about protecting the company during health and safety inspections, audits, or in the event of an accident. A lack of up-to-date inspections poses legal and financial risks.
💰 Long-term savings
Regularly serviced equipment lasts longer and more efficiently. This means fewer breakdowns, fewer replacements and lower operating costs.
Team trust
Looking after equipment sends a signal to employees: „Your health and life are our top priority.” This builds a positive work culture and increases motivation.

What does a professional SOI review look like?
W Hello Urban we carry out inspections in accordance with the European standard EN 365:2004 and with the equipment manufacturers' recommendations. Every element – from the harness to the pulleys – is thoroughly checked visually and functionally, documented, and classified as:
- approved for use,
- in need of repair,
- decommissioned.
After the review you receive full documentation – including inspection report, recommendations and confirmation of compliance with standards.
Summary: security is an investment, not a cost
Workplace accidents at height are often the result of minor oversights: a frayed rope, a cracked carabiner, a worn sling. That is why regular SOI review this is one of the simplest and most important ways to ensure safety at work.
Here at Urban, we remind you: it's not worth cutting corners on safety. Look after your people, look after your kit – the rest will take care of itself.
